Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s OutStanding in the Field initiatives encourage young people to consider taking up a career in sheep and beef farming and related service industries.
All secondary schools in New Zealand are offered the opportunity to be involved in OutStanding in the Field programmes every two years.
The OutStanding in the Field website http://www.outstandinginthefield.co.nz/ provides extensive information, video bites, photo galleries and numerous personal stories of great young role models in the agriculture industry.
Experience Days
Nine experience days were held in 2009, giving students the opportunity to try out the science, business and hands-on roles that agriculture has to offer. Over 116 teachers and careers advisors also increased their knowledge of and interest in agriculture by attending these days. In 2008 New Zealand Young Farmers joined the experience day programme by running a hands-on agriteens competition at each event.

Half Day Out
Half Day Out is an opportunity for a wide range of students, parents and teachers to meet and learn about career opportunities from young industry role models and education providers.
School Visits and Presentations
Visits to 12 secondary schools were undertaken during 2009. Teachers and careers advisors gained a better understanding of what the agriculture industry and the OutStanding in the Field programme can offer their students, and personal relationships with key teaching staff were strengthened.
Mentor Programme
The In2 The Field programme is designed to create ongoing links between students and successful young role models in business, science and hands-on roles. Students accepted into this programme are given one on one contact with a young industry mentor in their field of interest.
